2001 Worlds
Up

On Wednesday August 8 2001 Tom, Bob and I drove from work to Gananoque, Canada, to watch the World Championships 10000 meter race on CBC television.  Gananoque is directly North of Syracuse - it took about 2 hours, right up I-81, across a couple of bridges on the St. Lawrence River, and then West a few kilometres into town.

At Canadian Customs, the young lady asked us the usual questions.  When she asked our purpose in Canada, I told her we were there to watch the 10000 on CBC.  She said "The Worlds?!" Yes.  We were hoping for Haile Gebrselassie to win.  She said we must also hope for Jeff Scheibler, the Canadian Champion, since he was her brother-in-law.  We said we would, and she was getting off in time to race home to watch the race also.

First stop was The Beer Store, for several cases of Dave's Massive Irish Ale.  Then we drove around town for a bit looking for a restaurant.  Not finding what we had in mind, we returned to the main road into town to find a room (with cable) for the night.

The first place we tried had only 1 room left, which we wanted.  They wouldn't let us have it though, since there was only 1 bed.  I think they thought we were something we are not.  Anyway, two doors down the street we found a motel with little cottages, checked in, and watched the remainder of the afternoon session of the Worlds on TV while we drank our cold Dave's Massive.

After some beer, we walked down the street to Pizza Hut, got our dinner and brought it back to the hotel.  There, we drank beer and ate pizza, and watched the Worlds.

During the break between the afternoon and evening sessions, Bob and Tom tried to nap while I annoyed them.

Now I'm annoying them again by posting these pictures.

We went crazy when the 10000 finally came on.  Of course, it was a case of Bob and me joining Tom there - he had gone crazy as soon as we got to the motel and turned the TV on.

After the meet, we slept, got up at 5 in the morning, showered and drove back to work.
